On February 26, 2025, the European Commission (EC) introduced the Omnibus Simplification Package to support economic growth across the EU. The initiative is designed to reduce regulatory burdens on businesses, cultivating a more competitive and innovation-friendly environment (EC, 2025).
The package proposes more flexible reporting rules, particularly easing the requirements introduced by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). These changes are especially beneficial for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), reducing administrative workload and costs (EC, n.d.).
What Does it Mean for the Agrifood Industry?
The agriculture and agrifood sectors are also set to benefit from the simplification package. The EC has announced plans to simplify rules under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), with further updates expected in the second quarter of 2025 (European Parliament, 2025).
Additionally, the Commission introduced its “Vision for Agriculture and Food” roadmap earlier this year. This strategy outlines long-term goals for sustainability, focusing on key areas such as food security, environmental protection, investments, socio-economic development, and digitalization. These measures aim to support farmers and agribusinesses build resilience in current and future market landscapes (EC, 2025).
The Way Forward
While the Omnibus Simplification Package relaxes certain regulatory and reporting requirements, the EC emphasized its commitment to a sustainable future. Moreover, the Vision for Agriculture and Food highlights the crucial role of digital innovation in the EU’s path to sustainable farming and food production (EC, 2025).
For agrifood businesses, this is an opportunity—not a retreat from sustainability. Embracing digital tools and environmentally responsible practices will not only help meet evolving standards but also position companies for future success. Adaptable and forward-thinking companies can better seize new opportunities and remain resilient amid policy changes.
